Peace Learning Center's Impact on Indianapolis School Violence Prevention

Empowering Youth Through Conflict Resolution and Community Engagement

Indianapolis is witnessing a transformative approach to school violence prevention, spearheaded by the Peace Learning Center (PLC).

Established in 1997, PLC has been dedicated to fostering peace and equity among the city's youth.

Through innovative programs, the organization has made significant strides in reducing school violence and promoting positive community impact.

At Harshman Middle School, PLC's initiatives led to a remarkable 65% decrease in violent incidents and a 60% reduction in out-of-school suspensions over a year.

These statistics underscore the effectiveness of their conflict resolution programs in schools.

In collaboration with Pike Township Schools, PLC introduced a program where every fourth and fifth grader participates in activities at their Eagle Creek Park facility.

This initiative aims to instill peacemaking skills early, preparing students for the challenges of middle school and beyond.

Educators have observed that these experiences translate into improved emotional regulation and healthier peer relationships throughout the school year.

Beyond student-focused programs, PLC extends its reach to parents and educators, emphasizing the importance of community-based learning in Indianapolis.

By addressing the root causes of behavioral issues, the center fosters a holistic approach to school violence prevention.

In 2025, the Indianapolis Colts recognized PLC's contributions by awarding a $20,000 donation to support their Restorative Justice Initiative.

This funding bolsters efforts to decrease incarceration rates and violence among youth, highlighting the community's commitment to positive news in Indianapolis.

As Indianapolis continues to grapple with challenges in school environments, the Peace Learning Center stands as a beacon of hope.

Through their dedicated efforts, they exemplify the profound impact nonprofit organizations in Indy can have on fostering safer, more compassionate communities.
